TPGG Classic

Okatie, S.C. – The Tarheel Tour will be playing at Oldfield Country Club in Okatie, SC for the third consecutive year on March 26-28; however, this year’s event comes with a bit of an added bonus. Tour Players Golf Group, an Atlanta-based company, will serve as the sponsor of the TPGG Classic at Oldfield and in turn will provide a purse of $250,000, thus making it one of the richest events in all of developmental-tour golf.

“We are thrilled to have the Tour Players Golf Group as our title sponsor for this great event. The large purse, coupled with the impeccable golf course at Oldfield, is sure to attract some of the best players in the world,” said David Siegel, the Tarheel Tour’s owner and president.

The $250,000 purse will feature a winner’s share of $40,000 – a top prize which is sure to catch the eye of every player. The 54-hole tournament will feature a cut after 36 holes, at which point the top 60-players and ties will make it to Friday’s final round.

“Many of the players at Oldfield will be on the PGA Tour in 2009 and beyond. It is exciting to host a competition of this magnitude which still allows fans to get up close and personal with all of the players at this level,” said Siegel.

The 156-player field will feature a host of top players from all stages of professional golf. The field includes: Matt Cannon, a 16-time winner on the Tarheel Tour as well as the tour’s all-time leading money winner; Shaun Norris, who recently won the African Open on the Sunshine Tour in Port Alfred, South Africa; 2007 Tarheel Tour Championship winner and three-time Canadian Amateur champion Richard Scott; and 2004 U.S. Amateur runner-up Luke List. Local players of note include Cory Kaufman and Kenny Coakley, both of whom are from Bluffton. In addition, Savannah natives Tim O’Neal and Tommy Schaff will be in the field as well. O’Neal has spent four of the last five years as a full-time player on the Nationwide Tour.

One notable absence from this year’s field is 2007 champion Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey. Gainey earned national attention for his success on Golf Channel’s “Big Break” series, all while competing on the Tarheel Tour. His win at the 2007 Oldfield Open kicked off a stellar season which culminated with Gainey earning his PGA Tour card for 2008.
