Tour Players Golf Group CEO Al Couch and President Ronald E. Charron announced today their organization's sponsorship of the Tarheel Tour's third event of the year, which will now be called "The TPGG Classic.” Charron stated: "We are guaranteeing the purse increase from the 2007 purse of $86,600 to a total of $250,000 to illustrate the type of commitment our company is making to the Tarheel Tour going forward. This is just the first of future announcements that will demonstrate the big plans we have for this Tour.” The TPGG CLASSIC will be staged at the Greg Norman-designed Oldfield Country Club in Okatie, SC on March 26-28 and will be the Tarheel Tour's third and final event of its "Low Country Series.” The first two events will be held in Mt. Pleasant's, SC at Patriot Point Links on February 26-28 and RiverTowne Golf Club on March 4-6. The defending champion of the TPGG CLASSIC is PGA Tour member Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, who took home the winner's check of $14,000 in last year's event when he edged out Jonathan Fricke, who is now a fully exempt member of the Nationwide Tour. This announced purse increase will adjust the winner's share to $40,000 in 2008.
On December 21st, the Roswell, GA-based Tour Players Golf Group announced its agreement in principle to acquire the Tarheel Tour from owner David Siegel. They also announced that the present Tour management team will remain in place through the 2013 season. Plans remain for the agreement to be finalized in the next few weeks. The Charlotte-based Tarheel Tour has been in operation since 2002 and has had an estimated 2,500 players participate in the past six seasons. Future announcements for the 2008 Tarheel Tour season from Tour Players Golf Group will be forthcoming on this site in the immediate future.
