Mt. Pleasant, SC - The Tarheel Tour's opening event of the 2008 season was cancelled due to wind gusts of up to 46 miles per hour during Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's first round, which began at 7:30 a.m as scheduled, was cancelled at 12:30 p.m. when the 17th and 18th greens became unplayable. The event was then re-scheduled as a 36-hole event with first round tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, with the final round to be played on Thursday. Play was suspended again due to high winds on Wednesday at 10:49 a.m., and the tournament was officially cancelled at 1:00 p.m when it was determined that a 36-hole competition could not be completed.
The Tarheel Tour will now kick off its season next week at the Rivertowne Open at Rivertowne Country Club, also in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Rivertowne is widely considered as the toughest course on tour, evidenced by last year's winning score of 3-under-par 213 by Jody Bellflower. The event is scheduled for March 4-6 with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the 1st and 10th tees. A full field of 144 players will compete for the first Tarheel Tour title of 2008. We look forward to kicking off our season and hope to see players as well as spectators at Rivertowne!
