Fiese and Cannon Share First Round Lead

Del Ponchock

Mint Hill, NC- D.J. Fiese and Matt Cannon each shot a 7-under-par 65 in the Tarheel Tour’s Olde Sycamore Open on Wednesday and now share a one-shot lead over two players heading into Thursday’s second round.

Starting his day on the back nine, Fiese shot a mundane two-under-par 34 to open his round and then caught fire on his closing nine with birdies on six of his first seven holes to finish his day with 65 and a share of the day’s low round. The affable native of Smyrna, GA is competing in only his third event on the Tarheel Tour this season and is looking for his first career win this week.

Tarheel Tour all-time leading money winner Matt Cannon continued his hot play of late with a bogey free, seven-birdie round of 65 to sit tied atop the leaderboard with Fiese. The Huntersville, NC native won last month’s Warrior Classic for his 15th career Tarheel Tour win and followed that up with a second place finish at last week’s Southern Open. Cannon credits a hot putter and a return to good health for his recent run of success.

"I'm finally to the point where I feel completely healthy. I'm making putts and staying in the present. I just hope I can keep playing the way I'm playing."

Australian Rohan Allwood continued his strong play by making eight birdies to go with only two bogeys to fire a 66 and trail Cannon and Fiese by only one shot heading into the Thursday’s second round. Allwood missed the first three cuts of the 2007 Tarheel Tour season before losing in a playoff at Cabarrus Country Club back in May. Since then, Allwood has made seven cuts in a row and is looking to be the tour’s next first-time winner. Allwood is tied with Del Ponchock of West Palm Beach, FL, who shot 66 with six birdies and zero blemishes on his card.

Two shots back at five-under-par 67 is Tarheel Tour rookie Luke List. The former U.S. Amateur runner-up and Masters participant had a great professional debut Wednesday opening with three straight birdies before making a bogey at the fourth. The former Vanderbilt University All-American finds himself two shots behind Fiese and Cannon, tied with seven other players.

Thursday's second round of the Olde Sycamore Open will begin at 8:00 AM. As always the public is welcome to watch the future stars of the PGA Tour free of charge.
