Todd Claims Musgrove Mill Title In First Start
Clinton, SC- Tarheel Tour rookie Brendon Todd shot a 5-under par 67 to win the Musgrove Mill Classic, and the first place check of $15,000 by one shot over Matt Cannon Friday. Todd, entered play Friday one shot behind a quintet of players tied for the lead at 8-under par after 36-holes. The recent Georgia graduate managed to play his front side in 1-under par despite a double bogey at the long par-4 fourth hole. “I tried to focus on staying patient. I could have gotten frustrated after the double, but I was able to keep my composure and play well on the back,” stated the first team NCAA All-American.
After making the turn Todd was able to string together 4-birdies in a row on holes 13-16. He bogeyed the difficult 18th but his exceptional play to that point had given him a 2-shot cushion over Cannon, who also bogeyed the final hole to finish at 11-under. "To win a tournament like this reconfirms to me that I belong out here, playing with some of the best players in the country." Todd joins PGA Tour rookie Kyle Reifers as the only players in the history of the Tarheel Tour to win in their first start. Reifers won the 2006 Charlotte National Open and went on to win the Nationwide event in Knoxville, TN the following week. Todd hopes to soon join the Wake Forest graduate on the PGA Tour, "I'm going to keep going about it the same way. I'll play some more (Tarheel Tour events) leading up to Q-School and hopefully I can get out there."
All time leading money winner Matt Cannon continued his hot play of late adding a second place finish to his impressive resume. The Huntersville, NC made 5-birdies to go with his lone bogey and earned himself $8000 for his efforts. Cannon becomes the second Tarheel Tour player to earn more than $50,000 this season and only trails leading money winner William McGirt by $1800 in the race for the money title. Finishing alone in third place after firing a final round-70 is Andy Bare. The Jacksonville, FL native now owns 6-top three finishes this season. Bare earned $4000 for his effort and now passes Big Break star Tommy Gainey to move into third place on the money list with over $45,000 in total earnings. Scott Feaster was able to muster a final round 71 on the difficult Arnold Palmer layout to finish tied for fourth place with Alabama native Reid Edstrom. The Columbia, SC native broke out of his recent slump finishing the week with 13-birdies and 3-eagles. It was Feaster’s first top-10 on the Tarheel Tour this season.
Former Clemson alumnus Gregg Jones shot the low round of the day, a 6-under par 66 to vault into a tie for sixth place. Jones enjoyed his return to the Greenville-Spartanburg area making 7-birdies before a bogey on his final hole kept him from grabbing a share of the course record. The Tarheel Tour would like to thank Musgrove Mill Head Professional Jeff Tallman and his staff for all of their help running the event this week. The tour would also like to thank golf course superintendent Will Holroyd and his staff for providing a beautifully manicured golf course this week. The tour will break for a few weeks before resuming play at Northstone Country Club August 28-31. Fans can hear more about the Musgrove Mill Classic next week on Tarheel Tour Radio.
