Gainey Faces A Familiar Foe At Stonebridge

Frank Adams

Monroe, NC- Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey followed up his opening round 63 with a second round 66 to lead the Tarheel Tour's Stonebridge Classic by a shot over Jonathan Fricke heading into Friday's final round at Stonebridge Golf Club.

Gainey, a former Big Break champion made six birdies, including three in a row on holes 14-16, in what was a bogey free round. The Bishopville, SC native sits at 15-under par for the event and is looking to go wire to wire for his second victory on the Tarheel Tour in 2007. Gainey's first win of the 2007 season came at the Oldfield Open in Hilton Head, SC.

Gainey's nearest competitor is Covington, GA native, Jonathan Fricke. Fricke followed an opening round 67 with a 9-under par 63, the low round of the day. Starting on the tenth hole, Fricke flew out of the gate firing a 6-under par 30 on his opening nine punctuated by and eagle on the Par-5 18th. His round had seemingly stalled with a bogey on the fifth hole, but the second year pro was able to finish in style with birdies on each of his last four holes.

For Fricke, Friday's final round offers a chance at redemption. Back at the Oldfield Open in March Fricke led Gainey by a shot heading into the final round before “Gloves” was able to turn the deficit into a two shot win by firing a final round 67.

The third player in the final pairing is four time Tarheel Tour winner, Frank Adams. The Laurinburg native has struggled a bit in 2007 posting only three top tens in 15-events, but seems to be back in form after following his opening round 65 with a 6-under par 66 in round two. Adams trails Gainey by only two shots heading into Friday's final round.

Derek Brown and David Sanchez each ended the day at 11-under par for the tournament and trail Gainey by 4-shots heading into the final round. Sanchez is looking to improve on last week's second place finish at the Northstone Open while Brown is looking to record his first top-10 finish since the Walnut Creek Classic back in June.

The 36-hole cut fell at a blistering 5-under par on the Richard Osborne signature layout with 44-players surviving to play Friday's final round. The final round will begin at 7:30 Friday morning at Stonebridge Golf Club. The leaders will make their way to the first tee at 9:50. As always the public is welcome to watch tomorrow's stars of the PGA Tour battle it out for the $15,000 first prize, free of charge.
