Burkhart takes lead outright with second straight under par round

Mt. Pleasant, SC-Aiken, South Carolina's Dane Burkhart took sole possession of the lead after 36 holes at the Rivertowne Open with a second round 71 to go along with his opening round of 70. Burkhart began his day by negotiating the difficult back nine in even par. Then, after bogeying the first hole (his 10th), Burkhart ran off three birdies in his next five holes before dropping a shot at the tricky par-3 eighth. The 2006 Treyburn Open Champion managed to par his final hole to finish with a solid 1-under-par 71. “I played well today. I have really struck the ball well for two straight days; however I struggled a bit on the greens today, three putting three times. I felt the course played much easier than yesterday, but the wind did turn around 180 degrees and made club selection challenging because the individual holes played much differently today,” noted Burkhart.

Burkhart's 71 positioned him one shot ahead of first round co-leader Scott Weatherly, who fired an even-par 72, and Gainesville, Georgia native Stuart Moore, who tied for the low round of the championship with a 4-under-par 68.

Leading a very qualified group of players at 1-under-par 143 is 2005 Masters participant Luke List. List, a recent graduate of Vanderbilt University, matched Moore's second round 68, after he was able to fire a smooth 32 on his second nine to move within two shots of the lead. Also residing at 1-under par are South Carolina natives Will McGirt, Kevin Kisner, and Tommy Biershenk. All three players backed up first round 72's with second round 71's to finish 36 holes at one under par.

In total, 49 players survived the 36-hole cut which fell at 5-over-par 149. These players have earned the right to compete Thursday for a share of the $118,000 purse, with $18,500 going to the eventual champion. The final round will begin Thursday at 7:30 am off the 1st and 10th tees. As always, the event is open to the public and free of charge.
