Updates from the second week of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament as 38 EGOLF Tarheel Tour players managed to successfully navigate their way into the second stage. DURHAM, NC Treyburn Country Club T1 Steve Gilley PALM CITY, FL The EGOLF Tarheel Tour was well represented in South Florida as 10 current and past players managed to navigate their way through first stage at Martin Downs Country Club. Leading the way was former University of Florida standout Camilo Benedetti, who finished fourth after carding a 72-hole score of 9-under 275. Current Nationwide Tour player Jonathan Fricke got one step closer to the PGA Tour with a solo 11th finish. Fricke is currently 93rd on the 2008 Nationwide Tour money list with earnings just over $66,000 and two top-10 finishes to his name. EGOLF Tarheel Tour regular Will McGirt found himself in a comfortable position with 18 holes to play but quickly put himself in a corner in the final round with three bogeys in his first six holes. Thankfully for McGirt, he managed to birdie four of his next six and right what otherwise may have been a sinking ship as he was able to stay one-shot clear of the cut line and move into second stage. Former Wake Forest All-America selection Chad Wilfong was cruising along into second stage before a double-bogey at the par-3 ninth put him on the outside looking in. The Thomasville, NC-native quickly got back on track with a birdie on No. 10 and was able to add one more on 16 to make it through on the number at even-par 284. Martin Downs Country Club 4 Camilo Benedetti SPRING, TX 2006 Kannapolis Open champion Philippe Gasnier claimed a share of the medalist honors at Cypresswood Golf Club in Spring, TX with rounds of 68-71-66-71—276. Gasnier was one of six EGOLF Tarheel Tour players to successfully make it through at the club’s “Tradition” course. Keven Fortin-Simard, who played well as an amateur on the tour before deciding to turn professional, bogeyed his first two holes in the final round but rebounded with six birdies on the day (including Nos. 17 and 18) to finish T16 – well ahead of the cut number which fell at 3-under 285. Cypresswood Golf Club (Tradition) T1 Philippe Gasnier McKINNEY, TX Past EGOLF Tarheel Tour winners Derek Watson and Richard Scott joined Brett Stegmaier in McKinney, TX as the three earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s second stage of Qualifying School after making their way through first stage at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. Watson, who now lives in Andrews, TX after calling the Carolinas home for many years, has always been known for having the ability to rip off multiple birdies in the blink of an eye – and last week was certainly no exception. Watson found himself one-over par through five holes in the final round before going on a tear with six birdies in his final 13 holes to post a final-round 67 and sail past the cut line and into second stage. For Scott, the story was more geared towards perseverance as the three-time Canadian Amateur champion held the first-round lead with a 6-under 66, but lost it quickly with a second-round 75 before regaining his form to finish T12. Stegmaier, like Watson, also closed quickly by playing his final six holes in four-under par to make it through one-shot ahead of the vaunted number that keeps players up at night and requires their attention as a fluid total that is never set until it’s all over. Stonebridge Ranch Country Club (Hills) T12 Derek Watson SANTEE, CA Mike Lavery of Mission Viejo, CA and Luke List of Ringgold, GA were the two EGOLF Tarheel Tour players to successfully make their way through the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School last week in Santee, CA at Carlton Oaks Country Club. For Lavery, it was a matter of having the cushion to hang on as he found himself in the final pairing on Saturday and was able to card a 2-over 74 and still finish T7. List, a former Masters participant and U.S. Amateur runner-up, got of to a horrific start with a five-over 77 that quickly put him well outside the projected number before rebounding with rounds of 71-69-71 to finish T11. His 72-hole total of even-par 288 was three-shots clear of the cut which fell at 3-over 291. Carlton Oaks Country Club T7 Mike Lavery HOLLISTER, CA Steve Friesen of Scottsdale, AZ finished T4 to earn a spot in the second stage of the PGA Tour’s annual Qualifying Tournament after carding rounds of 67-67-69-71—274. Friesen fell four-shots shy of medalist honors as they went to Brady Stockton of Cave Creek, AZ. San Juan Oaks Country Club T4 Steve Friesen
