Indian Trail, NC- Two-time 2008 Tarheel Tour Winner David Robinson managed a 1-over-par-73 as he and the entire field of 144 competitors played through 20 to 30 mile per hour winds for the second consecutive day during Thursday’s second round of the Charlotte National Open at Charlotte National Golf Club in Indian Trail, NC.
Robinson shares the 36-hole lead at 5-under-par with former PGA Tour member Cameron Yancey. Despite failing to break par on Thursday morning, Robinson said that he wasn’t at all disappointed with his second round. “I really didn’t feel bad at all about shooting 73 out there today. I played pretty well, but I just got a few irons shots hung up in some tricky crosswinds. I still knew that par was going to be a good score on just about any hole out there.”
Yancey, a native of Blackstone, VA, birdied the difficult 469-yard-par-four 18th hole for his fifth birdie of the day against just a bogey and a double bogey to fire a second round 70 and join Robinson at 5-under. First round co-leader David Sanchez shot a very respectable 2-over-par 74 to stay within one shot of the leaders heading into Friday’s final round.
Three time runner-up in 2008 Joel Hendry offset a lone bogey with five birdies to fire a 4-under-par 68 and grab a share of fourth place with Columbus, GA native Jason Fober. Fober is one of just three players including co-leader Cameron Yancey who have broken par in each of the first two rounds at Charlotte National. The only player who bettered Hendry’s round on Thursday was 2006 Raintree Classic Champion Stephen Poole. Poole, who made a small splash on the PGA Tour scene with a 35th place finish at the Wyndham Championship just six weeks ago, battled back from an opening round of 75 to shoot a 5-under-par 67 and jump back into contention at 2-under-par. The former Clemson golfer made an astonishing six birides and an eagle against three bogeys to shoot the round of the day in the first group out on Thursday morning. Each of Poole’s bogeys was a result of three-putts from long range. “I really struck the ball solid which becomes even more important when playing in strong winds such as this. I’m obviously happy with today’s round and I’m pleased to be in the hunt going into Friday.” Poole is among a very distinguished group at 2-under-par including 2008 winners Jay McLuen and Kevin Kisner and his former Clemson teammate and Sapona Open Runner-up Gregg Jones.
