Indian Trail, NC- Sandersville, GA native David Robinson grabbed his third victory of the season on the Tarheel Tour when he holed a four foot par putt on the first hole of a sudden death playoff to defeat former PGA Tour member Cameron Yancey. Robinson and Yancey hit the only official shots on Friday morning as the final round was postponed shortly after it began at 9:33 a.m. and was officially cancelled due to rain, strong winds and standing water at 10:45 a.m.
Robinson, who previously collected victories at the Rivertowne and Northstone Opens this spring, set up his victory by hitting a knock down 5-iron from 182 yards with a helping wind to 15 feet on the 469 yard par-4 18th, which was the first and only playoff hole. Despite running the 15 footer about four feet past the hole, Robinson calmly buried his second putt to secure the victory after Yancey missed a nine foot par putt of his own. “I knew that 5-iron was a lot of club with a helping wind from that distance, but with the rain and cooler temperatures, I just knew the ball wasn’t carrying very far. As for the first putt, obviously if I made it Cameron’s par putt wouldn’t have mattered. Anytime you have a chance to win like that, you better be aggressive and try to end it” said Robinson. Nonetheless, his par in horrible conditions was good enough for his third win of the season after Yancey’s pitch shot skidded past the hole and his ensuing par putt missed.
The 2008 leading money winner collected $22,000 for the win and earned himself 600 EGOLF Points putting him in 4th place in the end of season point race with three events remaining. Also, Robinson kicks off the S & K Fall Finale Series earning 2,000 points for the victory, giving him an early lead in the four tournament series. More impressively, the former Georgia College standout and Hall of Fame member has become the first player to ever accumulate $100,000 in single season earnings, and leads the money list by nearly $44,800 over two time winner Ted Brown. This victory virtually assures Robinson of leading the money list at season’s end in three weeks.
Despite coming up short in the playoff, Yancey had his season defining event this week at Charlotte National. Even though the Blackstone, VA native has now made eight of nine cuts, this was his first top ten finish of the season. He collected $13,000 and jumped up to 24th on the money list.
David Sanchez matched his season best finish with a four-under par total for 36-holes, good for a solo third place finish and $8500. The former Nationwide Tour player also finished third at the River Hills Open back in July. Jason Fober and Joel Hendry each finished the event at three-under par, tied for fourth. The finish earned each player $6150 for the week.
The EGolf Tarheel Tour would like to thank Charlotte National Head Golf Professional and General Manager Dave Moore, as well as Head Superintendent Mike Thompson and his staff for preparing a superb golf course and helping put on a quality event. The EGolf Tarheel Tour returns to action next week with the Columbia Open at beautiful Columbia Country Club in Blythewood, SC. The 144-player field will tee it up in the first round beginning on Tuesday September 30.
