The PGA Tour’s annual Qualifying Tournament is underway this week across the United States and a plethora of EGOLF Tarheel Tour players find themselves inside the number and outside the number – either way chasing one dream.
With one round to go, the tour is being well represented in Florence, SC at Florence Country Club as seven of the top 10 players through 54 holes played on the EGOLF Tarheel Tour this year. Leading the way at 12-under 198 is John Elliott of Westerley, RI, who holds a one-shot lead over Bryant Odom and tour winner Stephen Poole. David Robinson, who collected three wins on the EGOLF Tarheel Tour this year and over $100K in earnings, is T5 and six shots clear of the number at 9-under 201. Fernando Mechereffe, Frank Adams III and David Sanchez round out the tour’s representation in the top 10.
In St. Augustine, FL, just a few miles south of PGA Tour headquarters and the TPC Sawgrass, 80 players are battling for a limited 23 spots and ties at narrow St. Johns Golf & Country Club. Windy conditions allowed for only seven players to break 70 on Thursday as Mother Nature played more friend than foe in an arena where dreams can disappear with one bad round. One bright spot in the third round was EGOLF Tarheel Tour regular Jeff Curl, who fired a 3-under 69 to continue his fall hot streak. Curl had stumbled with an opening-round 72 before bouncing back with a second-round 67 and into the top 10 with Thursday’s round. Chip Deason (T2), Josh Teater (T4), Don Carpenter (T6) and Major Manning (T6) also find themselves inside the top 10 after playing the EGOLF Tarheel Tour in 2008.
Further down I-95, conditions were not much better as coastal winds laid havoc to the field at Crandon Park Golf Course in Key Biscayne, FL. Jason Dillard leads the way for the EGOLF Tarheel Tour as he is T7 with 18 holes still to play at even-par 216. Jay McLuen, fresh off a season in which he claimed the tour’s Manor Classic in Virginia, is currently just inside the vaunted “number” at 5-over 221 and will need another solid round on Friday to advance to the next stage.
In Kingwood, TX, the EGOLF Tarheel Tour is well represented where it counts: At the top. Brian Duncan and Michael Sims share second place through 54 holes at 9-under 207. Duncan used an eagle on the par-5 10th en route to a third-round 67 and Sims recorded a five-birdie 31 on the back nine on his way to a 68. Daniel Fox is T5 and seven shots inside the number.
EGOLF Tarheel Tour players find themselves in contention at East Valley Golf Club (CA) and Dayton Valley Golf Club (NV) out west. Wil Collins of Rapid City, SD leads the western contingent with a solo third-place standing at Dayton Valley as he sits five shots behind leader Marc Lawless but nine shots clear of the 23rd spot.
