Gordonsville & Wintergreen, VA – The EGOLF Tarheel Tour Championship got underway today at Spring Creek Golf Club and Stoney Creek Golf Club as a field of 147 players set out to gain their share of a $200,000 purse – namely the winner’s share of $34,000. With half of the field in Gordonsville and the other half in Wintergreen, Luke List of Nashville, TN set the early mark with a 7-under 65 at the Wintergreen Resort’s Stoney Creek course and will take a one-shot lead into Friday’s second round.

List began his round on the back nine at Stoney Creek and set the picturesque Shamokin side ablaze with seven birdies, one bogey and one par for a 6-under 30. While he was forced to suffer through six pars on his closing nine, he still managed to shoot 35 and find a spot atop a leaderboard loaded with talent.

“I was putting really well and hit some good shots and drove it really well,” said List. “I didn’t take advantage of anything on the back (nine) and just kind of coasted. I had some opportunities to shoot something special, the putts just didn’t go in.” List, who ended a heralded amateur career when he turned pro during the week of the 2007 U.S. Open, is making his ninth start of 2008 on the EGOLF Tarheel Tour, where he has recorded five top-10 finishes including each of his last two starts. While he has yet to ascend to the PGA Tour, the expectations are there for a player who decided that less play is not better with Q-School on the horizon.

Jeff Curl, Matt Davidson, Daryl Chappell

“I’m playing really well. This is my fourth straight week and I’m playing next week too. Last year, I took a lot of time off going into Q-School and I felt like I wasn’t ready. This year, I’m playing really well so I might as well play as much as I can.” Jeff Curl, who won the Walnut Creek Open last week in Goldsboro, NC, picked up where he left off with the day’s second-best round at Stoney Creek – a 6-under 66. With his father and former PGA Tour winner Rod Curl on the bag for a second consecutive week, the ever-confident Curl was able to navigate his way around the Monocan and Shamokin nines without a bogey on his card – a feat not many could claim as the narrow fairways and undulating greens wreaked havoc on a day highlighted by flawless weather.

Matt Davidson and Daryl Chappel recorded the low rounds of the day at Spring Creek with joint 66s as fast greens took their toll on many players. Chappell, who played at nearby Virginia Commonwealth, birdied six of his first nine holes to turn at 30 before hitting the proverbial par train with nine pars to finish his round.

Davidson, who played the PGA Tour in 2005, maneuvered his way around the arduous Spring Creek course with six birdies and an eagle offset by two bogeys. The Furman University graduate underwent shoulder surgery during the offseason and did not return to competition until the middle of summer. Since then, it has been trial and error for the New Jersey native as he has claimed one top-10 finish in limited starts on the EGOLF Tarheel Tour.

The second round will begin on each course at 8:30 am on Friday morning with each half of the field switching courses for round two. After the completion of 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 60 players and ties with the final round being played at Spring Creek. As with all EGOLF Tarheel Tour events, the tournament is open to the public and free of charge.
