Kim Grabs First Round Lead at River Hills

Lake Wylie, SC- Former ACC Individual Champion Hank Kim recorded the only bogey-free round of the day en route to a 5-under-par 67 and a one-stroke lead over a trio of players after the first round of the Tarheel Tour’s River Hills Open at River Hills Country Club.

The former North Carolina State standout posted birdies at holes 3, 4, 7, and 9 to go out in 32. After birdieing the short par-five 10th hole to reach five under, he carefully executed eight consecutive pars over the narrow and winding back nine to close out his round. Kim’s 67 gives him a one shot lead over Kingston, TN native Jonathan Mount, former Masters Tournament invitee Luke List, and Cullman, AL resident Jason Dillard. Mount, a former University of Tennessee golfer, recorded five birdies against just one bogey en route to the only 68 of the morning wave. In the afternoon, Luke List birdied two of his final three holes to fire a 4-under-par 68, which held up as the low round of the afternoon. The former Vanderbilt All-American was joined by Jason Dillard at 4-under-par after Dillard recorded seven birdies on his way to shooting 68.

A host of players that includes long-time Tarheel Tour standout Tommy Biershenk and Scotland’s Joel Hendry got off to solid starts with rounds of 3-under-par 69 to share 5th place. Roberto Castro and Michael Sims, who are the last two winners of the Tarheel Tour’s Spring Creek Classic, also are in the group at 3-under-par.

The majority of the field was able to stay around even par as 50 players managed to shoot even par or better, but only 11 players were able to break 70 during Wednesday’s first round. The extremely narrow fairways along with firm and undulating Willard Byrd designed greens kept scores relatively high as the field of 130 players averaged 74.72, nearly three strokes over par.

The second round of the Tarheel Tour’s River Hills Open at River Hills Country Club will begin Thursday at 8:00 a.m. on the 1st and 10th tees. Please come out and watch the best players in developmental tour golf take on River Hills in the second round of the River Hills Open.
