Kisner Torches Cabarrus With Course Record Tying 63

Concord, NC- Aiken, SC native Kevin Kisner fired a course record tying 63 at Cabarrus Country Club on Wednesday to take a commanding three stroke lead over David Robinson after the first round of the Tarheel Tour’s Cabarrus Classic.

The former University of Georgia standout, who is playing in his first Tarheel Tour event since his runner up finish at the TPGG Classic at Oldfield Country Club, started on #10 and shot a modest 2-under-par 34 on his first nine in unseasonably cold temperatures, before blazing around the front nine in 29 to record a 9-under-par 63.

David Robinson
Kisner, who is currently fourth on the Tarheel Tour money list despite only competing in two of the first four events, came to the 6th hole (his 15th) at 4-under par and in great shape to post one of the better scores of the morning. From that point on he turned a very good round into a phenomenal one by finishing birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie to close out his course record-tying 63. “I wasn’t really thinking I was about to shoot a super low number but I hit it to six inches on six, birdied seven, and then hit it about five feet for eagle on eight. At that point I started to think this may be a real low one.” said Kisner. His round matched the first round 63 of eventual 2007 Southern Open Champion Shaun Norris. Scott Brown and Andrew Suggs also shot 63 in the second round of the same event.

The only player other than Kisner to shoot lower than 67 in the first round was 2008 Rivertowne Open Champion David Robinson. The Sandersville, GA resident shot a spotless 6-under-par 66 in which he made six birdies and no bogeys. Robinson birdied all four par five holes including the difficult 628-yard 18th to conclude his round. Robinson, a native of Sandersville GA sits just ahead of Kisner in third place on the current money list. Robinson backed up his win at Rivertowne with another top-10 finish at the TPGG Classic. Robinson, who is known for his consistently strong play, has made 27 consecutive cuts on the Tarheel Tour dating back to the beginning of 2006.

Seven players tied for third after one round at Cabarrus

Among those players four shots back are 2007 Olde Sycamore Open Champion D.J. Fiese and Ellington, CT native Jeff Curl. Fiese, who resides in Roswell, GA, narrowly missed a playoff last week at the Sapona Open where he finished tied for third. Curl, a long time Tarheel Tour player, Monday qualified for the Nationwide Tour’s Henrico County Open last week; where he went on to make the cut and finish tied for 44th. The second round of the Cabarrus Classic will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1. Please come watch the action at Cabarrus Country Club. The event is free and open to the public.
